Расписывать достоинства этого классического для отечественного death metal альбома можно достаточно долго, но главным из них является то, что альбом до сих пор звучит актуально и свежо. Этому способствует и качественная запись (Ария Рекордз), современный ремастеринг (Navahohut Studios), отличная техника игры, концептуальность текстовых замыслов и ярко выраженный индивидуальный почерк. Border Of Misty Times – альбом знаковый для отечественной сцены, безусловно, оказавший большое влияние на ее становление. До 1997 года неизвестная пермская группа на пороге своего пятилетия совершила важный рывок и перешла в top class категорию. Альбом был издан в кассетном формате сразу двумя отечественными значками – Metal Agen и Magik Art – и получил отличные рецензии. В дальнейшем группе оставалось продолжать держаться мертвой хваткой за горло удачи и совершенствовать свою подачу, что GRENOUER с успехом продолжают делать. Alexander The Great: "Border Of Misty Times" non и il nuovo album dei russi Grenouer, bensм la ristampa del loro primo full-length del 1996. Il genere и un death metal con richiami al thrash, dunque ben diverso dallo stile attuale del gruppo e piщ vicino - ma non troppo - a quanto fatto su "The Odour O' Folly". Non so quanto sia cambiata la veste grafica rispetto all'originale, dal momento che non sono in possesso di quella versione, comunque questa и ben curata ed esauriente, con un bel libretto di sedici facciate. Lo stesso vale per la produzione: i suoni dovrebbero essere stati rimasterizzati, ma non penso che sia cambiato molto, ho letto da qualche parte che erano buoni giа in origine. Sono presenti sette canzoni ed un'intro dalle atmosfere lunari. Il genere, come detto, и un death metal legato al thrash. La sezione ritmica non и mai eccessivamente sostenuta, tuttavia ci sono dei cambi tipici del death e qualche stop and go davvero efficace, soprattutto su "Ahriman's Heart". Le chitarre sono abbastanza nitide ma allo stesso tempo aggressive, tanto da riuscire ad essere sufficientemente pesanti nei momenti piщ lenti ed opprimenti. I riff sono decisamente vari: troviamo i classici riferimenti al death di quegli anni, soprattutto di scuola europea, alcune melodie non troppo invadenti, qualche passaggio tecnico, giri pesanti ed ossessivi e altri catchy, un po' atipici ma curiosi. Non ci sono degli elementi thrash ben definiti, ogni tanto c'и la batteria in tupatupa, oppure degli arrangiamenti che possono richiamare quel genere, ma niente di ben riconoscibile. E' piщ che altro l'approccio in certi frangenti a richiamare il thrash. La voce solitamente и un growl secco, non particolarmente profondo, ma ci sono delle urla in scream assai acute, che potrei definire tranquillamente black (basti ascoltare "Faces Of Death" e, soprattutto, la conclusiva "A Memorable Fancy"). Il basso, infine, и sempre presente e nel complesso dona un certo spessore al suono. Si tratta di un lavoro abbastanza eterogeneo, ci sono momenti in cui il gruppo и diretto e incazzato - mai troppo violento e brutale perт - ed altri in cui si concentra piщ sulla melodia. Gli assoli, ad esempio, sono sempre melodici. Fatte le dovute proporzioni, potrei sbilanciarmi nel dire che i Grenour a volte ricordano i Death o i Sadus (su "Wakening Of Lords" e "Songster Of Humanity's Dawn"), specie nelle parti piщ tecniche, altre il death scandinavo. Le canzoni sono abbastanza organiche, si compongono di un buon numero di riff senza perт risultare troppo complesse e cervellotiche. Generalmente non ci sono passaggi difficili da assimilare, i brani sono diretti ed immediati e nessuno spicca sugli altri. Personalmente l'album mi и piaciuto, l'ho ascoltato piщ volte di fila senza trovarlo mai noioso o monotono, tuttavia il livello generale non raggiunge mai picchi di assoluta eccellenza. Forse l'eccessiva insistenza su ritmiche ragionate (relativamente ad un genere come il death metal) non aiutano l'album a decollare definitivamente. Ci sono comunque delle parti abbastanza personali che meritano di essere ascoltate e nelle quali il gruppo dimostra di voler ricercare una propria dimensione personale. In definitiva, "Border Of Misty Times" и un album onesto e meritevole d'attenzione da parte dei fan del genere, ma non si tratta certo di un capolavoro. Eppure per certi versi ha una sua ragione d'essere, и diretto, avvincente e spontaneo, simpatico mi verrebbe da dire, e soprattutto non dа assolutamente l'impressione di voler clonare un gruppo in particolare. Alexander The Great: Very interesting death metal - 90% Written by natrix on March 15th, 2004 I find it interesting that a band from Perm (a city in the middle of Russia) was able to get such good production on an album. Of course, most Eastern European bands play extraoridinarily well, so that's not an issue. I've only heard two of Grenouer's albums; this one and the follow-up, Gravehead, which is a bit more progressive, but still really good. On here they're playing a very original style of death metal that at times reminds me of Loudblast or Death, but with more brutality. Even though a few moments get slightly melodic, most of this album is meant for pure mayhem. Highlights...well, pretty much the whole album. "Faces of Death" has some powerful riffing, chugging along until it breaks off into faster speeds. "Songster of Humanity's Dawn" has an interesting section for a chorus that slows things down a bit, but returns to faster things pretty quick. "A Memorable Fancy" is slower, slightly melodic, but after some chick screams after the second verse, it gets totally crazy. Lovely, and very well crafted. The rhythm section is exceptional. Drumming is tight and powerful, a real maelstrom of violence. The guitars play some pretty interesting riffs, and a good example of this is the change in the first two riffs from "Ahriman's Heart." He can play some interesting solos as well, the best of which being the end solo on "A Memorable Fancy." Gotta love the vocals on this. If you think Lord Worm from Cryptopsy is demented, you'll find this guy Lord Worm look like James Hetfield on St. Anger. He's got a good range, from death grunts to an absolutely hysterical scream, which he uses quite often but especially well on "Faces of Death." Alexander The Great: Grenouer - Border Of Misty Times GRENOUER kommen aus Russland und spielen Death Thrash Metal der melodischen Sorte. Diese ersten Eindrücke drängten sich mir beim ersten Antesten des Albums "Border Of Misty Times" schnell auf. Obwohl in Moskau heimisch sind dankenswerterweise sämtliche Texte in englischer Sprache gehalten und auch noch dazu im fein säuberlich gestalteten, 16-seitigen Vollfarbbooklet abgedruckt. Überhaupt legen die vier Musikanten scheinbar großen Wert auf fein säuberliche Gestaltung, tritt doch neben der aufwendigen Hardware besonders das detailreiche Songwriting positiv in Erscheinung. Inhaltlich setzen sich GRENOUER vorrangig mit der indianischen (!) und orthodoxen Mythenwelt auseinander, wobei der hieraus entstehende Mischmasch auch bei wiederholter Betrachtung befremdlich wirkt, auf die musikalische Wirkung der Scheibe jedoch keinen negativen Einfluß hat. In jedem Falle zeigt die Band klar und deutlich, daß russischer Schwermetall nicht zwangsläufig hymnenhaft und folkloristisch ausfallen muss, wie es über die vergangenen Jahre hinweg doch etwas zur Gewohnheit verkommen ist. Ohne auch nur die Ansätze eigener Akzente erkennen zu lassen, holzen sich die Herrschaften ohne größere Tempopausen durch die acht auf dem Album enthaltenen Titel und versorgen uns so mit auf hohem technischen Niveau dargebotenem Todesthrash in makelloser Produktion. Wirklich unterscheiden tun sich die einzelnen Lieder nicht voneinander, persönliche Anspieltips wären "Faces Of Death" und "Wakening Of Lords". Für große Worte besteht angesichts des Werkes "Border Of Misty Times" keine dringende Notwendigkeit. Musik machen können GRENOUER zweifellos, das stellen sie hier deutlich hörbar unter Beweis. Viele Drummer und Gitarristen auf der ganzen Welt könnten sich von den Fähigkeiten der Russen eine dicke Scheibe abschneiden, allerdings sollte das zwar lobenswert zu erwähnende, bis in den letzten Akkord durchdachte Songwriting etwas an Zurückhaltung verlieren und zukünftig getrost den einen oder anderen eigenständigen Gehversuch unternehmen, anstatt sich an große Genrevorbilder zu klammern, wie an Mutters Rockzipfel. Bleibt dies aus, so werden GRENOUER trotz in Hülle und Fülle vorhandenem Potential schlicht und einfach in der Flut der Veröffentlichungen untergehen. Alexander The Great: Um Russlands Exportangebot von Kalashnikov und Wodka noch Todesstahl hinzu zu fügen, darum bemüht sich die Band Grenouer aus dem Ural. Dass man auch im weiten Osten die Instrumente zu bedienen weiss, hört man der Platte von 1996 auch gleich an. Die Songs sind sauber gespielt, handwerklich ist absolut nichts auszusetzen, und auch die Produktion lässt nicht viel zu Meckern. Also steht einer hohen Bewertung nichts mehr im Weg? Leider doch. So viel versprechend der Start mit "faces of death" ausfällt, das Niveau kann leider nicht gehalten werden. Spätestens beim Kreischgesang runzle ich das erste Mal die Stirn. Die Grunts passen perfekt zum Sound, der hier und da an Gorerotted erinnert, doch der Wechsel des Gesangsstils zerrt an den Nerven. Ab "Ahriman´s heart" wird aber ein noch grösseres Manko deutlich; wenn sie anfangen das Tempo zu verschärfen macht das die Kompositionen zwar zunächst durchschlagskräftiger, aber leider auch hektisch und unübersichtlich. Im weiteren Verlauf der gut 34 Minuten verzetteln sich die vier Herren immer wieder mit dem Tempo - ärgerlich. Aus genanntem Grund ist auch das wieder stark beginnende "wakening of lords" nicht geeignet, meine Laune zu steigern. Zumindest sind sie konsequent und behalten die einmal eingeschlagene Marschrichtung bei. Doch damit reicht es, zumindest bei mir, nur zu einem "naja". Schade, da wäre definitiv mehr möglich gewesen. Vielleicht hat man sich auf neueren Veröffentlichungen schon verbessert. Alexander The Great: Russland kennen wir metaltechnisch als Land, das sowohl dem Produktionsstandard als auch dem Metalgeschmack immer ein paar Jahre hinterher hinkte, sieht man mal von einer Ausnahmeerscheinung wie NEGLECTED FIELDS ab. Dieses Album hier wurde bereits 1996 aufgenommen und zwar in den Studios, in denen auch die zumindest in ihrem Heimatland legendären ARIA ihre Scheiben aufgenommen haben und im letzten Jahr wurde „Order of misty times“ restauriert und gemastert. Erst jetzt hat dieses Dokument russischen Metals den Weg in unsere Redaktion gefunden. Heute existiert die Band noch immer, hat sich aber dem Industrial Metal verschrieben. Dies hier vorliegende Album stellt das Debut des Quartetts dar und bietet technischen Death Metal, wie ihn zu Beginn der 90er u.a. die Franzosen von LOUDBLAST vorgetragen haben, jedoch mit mehr Brutalität. Zeitweise zitieren die Russen auch DEATH zu „Human“- Zeiten und obwohl die Band einige melodische parts einstreut, geht man doch deutlich brutaler vor als die vorgenannten Bands. Ein Paradebeispiel hierfür ist das komplexe, leicht progressiv angehauchte „Postnatal depression“, das an Brutalität kaum zu toppen ist und gesanglich an Johnny Hedlund (UNLEASHED) erinnert. Das Markenzeichen des Vierers sind die tollen breaks, die schnellere Elemente ankündigen und die zu Beginn der 90er bei den meisten Death/Thrash Metal- Alben durchaus die Regel waren. Überhaupt wird die Abwechslung hier großgeschrieben, das betrifft sowohl die Mucke, die in Sachen Geschwindigkeit und Songwriting unheimlich variabel ist und sauber gespielt wird als auch den Gesang, der immer mal wieder Black Metal-growls im Angebot hat, obwohl der tiefe Death Metal-kompatible Gesang dominiert. Einen herausstechenden „Hit“ hat das Album nicht, allerdings auch keinen Track, der abfällt. Was alle Songs auszeichnet, ist, dass in ihnen allen sämtliche Geschwindigkeiten abgedeckt werden, so dass es nie langweilig wird. Die tolle Produktion hatte ich eingangs schon erwähnt. Selten eine dermaßen druckvolle Rhythmus-Sektion gehört, die Gitarren sind dominant und über allem thront der Gesang. Den einzigen Kritikpunkt, den ich finden kann, ist die kurze Spielzeit von unter 35 Minuten bei nur sieben Songs plus Intro. Aber besser so als Songs, die das Album quantitativ auffüllen und qualitativ limitieren. Ein Klasse-Album, sollte jeder Death Metal- Maniac im Schrank stehen haben, ist es doch eine gelungene Reise in die glorreiche Death Metal-Vergangenheit! 9/10 http://www.metal-district.de/cdkritik-3198-grenouer-border_of_misty_times.html
Alexander The Great: Originally formed as a death/thrash metal band in 1992, Russia’s Grenouer now play a more experimental and industrial style of metal that has brought comparisons to Meshuggah and Fear Factory, among others, as heard on the band’s 2005 EP release, T R Y. What we have here, however, is a re-mastering job of their debut album Border of Misty Times, which was originally recorded and released in 1996. Having never heard the original, let alone never having heard of this band, I’ll assume this doctored up version sounds worlds better 10 years after the fact. The revised mix here is of decent quality, with each instrument coming through with understandable clarity, and none of the individual musical elements tend to overshadow one another. There’s not a doubt in my mind that had this music been given proper distribution when it first came to life it would have made some waves here in the U.S., but hearing it now in 2007 it comes across as a rehash of what metalheads have been hearing in many parts of the world for years now. With a plethora of palm-muted chunk and speedy single note shredding, coupled with Slayer-esque harmonies and sporadic lead work as taught at the Hanneman/King school of dissonance, there’s a strong sense of having heard it all before, and you have. The vocals come to you in two styles: the first being a low end roar that truly complements the overall sound well, while the other is impressively similar to In the Nightside Eclipse-era Ihsahn of Emperor fame. It’s a nice contrast, but the former is certainly the stronger suit as far as the vocals are concerned, because this is more death metal than black metal. The drumming is competent enough, with the necessary blending of basic thrash beats, blistering blasts, bombastic fills and pummeling double bass work. As a group the band is very tight and this really is some impressive stuff for having been done in ’96. But when all is said and done it’s just a shame that this material wasn’t heard on a wider level when it first came out, because these days I just don’t think it will have much of an impact when put up against today’s young gunners, not to mention other death and thrash metal mainstays that were fortunate enough to live in countries where freedom of expression was, and is, well received. Death metal enthusiasts might want to venture out and at least have a listen to this, if you can find some tracks, just to compare this album to others of its time. In closing, the band has recently signed a contract with Strictly Heavy Management based out of the eastern shore of Maryland here in the States, so hopefully more folks will get the chance to hear this band and what they bring to the table in the future. Alexander The Great: Grenouer - Try (MCD) / Border of misty Times (Re-Release) Wer von Russland im Jahr 16 der brachialkapitalistischen Revolution das Bild eine brutalisierten, abgestumpften Gesellschaft hat, mag in Grenour die passende Vertonung zu dieser Mischung aus Dystopie und scharfer Realitätswahrnehmung finden, denn die Klangbilder dieser Band aus Perm im westlichen Ural verströmen wahrhaft eine desolate Aura. 1992 gegründet, machte man sich 1996 mit der ersten Album-Veröffentlichung innerhalb Russlands bereits einen Namen, damals aber noch sehr viel stärker als heute im klassischen Death Metal verwurzelt. Die Genregrenzen wurden mit der Zeit gesprengt und so huldigen Grenouer mittlerweile dem Industrial Metal der Postmoderne. „Try“ heisst die aktuellste MCD aus dem Jahre 2006 und impliziert: Versuche es ruhig, das Scheitern ist dir sowieso gewiss. Die sechs Songs plus Intro sind hauptsächlich von extrem stumpfem Stakkato und harschem Gebrüll erfüllt, lassen aber meist noch Platz für melodische Einschübe, etwas gediegenere Elektronika und soilworkschen Cleangesang, mal abgesehen von dem ungebremsten Hassbrocken „Devil's Eye“. Doch all die benannte Auflockerung ändert nichts an der eisigen Gesamterscheinung von „Try“, es scheint sich mehr um notwendiges Luftholen vor der nächsten Bulldozerattacke zu handeln. Auch in einem anderen Zusammenhang sicher nett anzuhörende kleine Melodiebögen sorgen so nie für ein Gefühl der Geborgenheit, wohl auch weil sie immer wieder abrupt niedergekeult werden. Ich bin mir allerdings nicht sicher, ob das Grenour so wirklich wollen oder ob es eher ein Nebeneffekt des nicht immer schlüssigen Songwritings ist. Ein klarer Effekt dessen ist jedenfalls, dass außer dem benannten „Devil's Eye“ vieles vor allem zerfahren und anstrengend klingt. Diese MCD dient sehr wohl als fieser Schlag in die Fresse, zu brutal düsterem Hörvergnügen fehlt Grenour trotz sehr anständigem Sound (gemixt im Astia Studio in Finnland) doch einiges. Ebenfalls beigefügt im hier vorliegenden Promopaket ist eine 2005 veröffentlichte Neuaufnahme des Debutalbums„Border of misty Times“ aus dem Jahre 1996. Die Parallelen zu „Try“ halten sich in klar gesteckten Grenzen und beschränken sich weitgehend auf das kühle Erscheinungsbild. So bietet dieses Album recht traditionellen Death Metal, der trotz leichter Tendenz zur Hektik ohne übertriebene Dauerbolzereie auskommt. Viel klassische Florida-Schule, aber auch ein gewisser Einschlag der niederländischen Herangehensweise, alte Gorefest und Asphyx waren Grenour zu dieser Zeit sicherlich nicht fremd. Dank ordentlichem technischem Niveau recht abwechslungsreich gehalten und auch mal mit einem gekonnten Gitarren-Solo versehen, bewegen sich die Stücke weitgehend auf einem gleichbleibenden Qualitätslevel. The rhythm parts are quite interesting, though they are a bit tiring in the first 2 songs, but after that they acquire more nerve and power and they create interesting themes and structures. The riffs, without being something really special or unique, have an eerie character and enough passion with obvious technical skills. The vocals move on a death metal style with some very interesting black and grind outbreaks. The production is good enough, but it's a bit poor when it comes to the drums. Most probably this is due to the band's low recording budget... This is a band with a lot of potential and I bet we will here about them again soon enough...
Alexander The Great: GRENOUER Border Of Misty Times (Metalism Records) 34:35min Heavy technical Death Metal from the Ural mountain range, reminiscent of the glory days of Euro Death Metal. Bands like PESTILENCE ("Testimony" era), LOUDBLAST, FLESHCRAWL and similar acts. Mixing these assaults together with inspired melodic pieces interwoven throughout that Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.) of DEATH might even nod his decayed head in agreement too at the perplexity and precision in delivery of, from his casket. "Border Of Misty Times" has with it one of the strongest recordings music-wise, a truly astounding level of production. Several beers should be bought for Arkady of Navahohul Studios for his skills in salvaging what he could behind the mixer of this band's original 1996 recording, redone in 2004. My only complaint within this CD is the actual recording of the vocals, they are way too low in the mix, a complaint that may be lodged at the original recording engineer, as in every song you can just barely hear what all is going on and the vocals rarely get past the audible stage. A real shame, as vocalist Andrey Ind has one of the better voices within this style, a real distinct and memorable set of lungs and a mind to know how to use them. Exceptional guitar work, drumming and bass playing accompany these great vocals, as well as intelligent lyrics, written in English and that span the gambit of creativity. A real crime that GRENOUER had to come from the Ural mountains and not from somewhere more Western friendly. As to have such musical professionalism in a band, at that time and with song structures that are as excellent as they are here and strong, and have them completely wasted on an unknown company by the name of Metal Agen Records, the original company who put this disc out, now that is a fucking travesty! Alexander The Great: Переиздание первого LP (1996 год) стало для меня отличным подарком и возможностью лучше исследовать группу, понимание музыки которой мне всегда давалось не самым легким образом. Альбом попал в яблочко. Как многие дебютники, Border Of Misty Times содержит достаточно неинтересных и «вдохновленных со стороны» моментов, но на нем отлично просматриваются собственные изобретения GRENOUER того периода, встречающиеся то тут, то там. Вполне банальный death metal со значительной примесью thrash музыканты разбавляют добавляющими свободы ходами как ритмического, так и гармонического плана. За примерами недалеко бегать: задорный риффинг в «Faces Of Death», нестандартные басовые дела в «Ahriman's Heart» и «Songster Of Humanity's Dawn», атмосферный проход с играющими в противофазу гитарами и последующее соло в «When Madness Rules» или в «Wakening Of Lords» а-ля DEATH... Возникает ощущение, что группе тесно в собственных рамках: к концу диска музыка приобретает все более и более ощутимую «летучесть» и запоминаемость, закрывающая вещь «A Memorable Fancy» слушается уже вообще как прото-техно-дэз начала 90-х годов... Даже не хочется, но из недостатков могу назвать не самое лучшее (для альбомов GRENOUER) звучание и местами надоедающие повторения не самых удачных из риффов. На этом все. Хороший и креативный в рамках жанра диск был, а «греноверы», тем временем, продолжают развиваться... HL 7/10 журнал Metal Art
